Community Building
One of the biggest priorities for the chapter is supporting fellow Japantown and community organizations in an attempt to foster increased cooperation, communication, and goodwill. Recent community-building activities are highlighted below.
High School Interns Collaborate with Community Activists to Create a Transformative Experience in San Jose Japantown
Day of Remembrance Held By San Jose State Students. San Jose JACL’s former Congressman, Mike Honda, was a featured speaker.
The streets of San Jose Japantown rang with laughter, shouts and music. The 2019 Immersive event was themed: “bringing out the inner artist”.
We are excited to announce the first San Jose JACL Manzanar Pilgrimage. This will be a 3-day journey beginning on Friday morning, April 26, 2019 until the evening of Sunday April 28th.

On November 22, 2016, in lieu of its regular Board meeting at the Issei Memorial Building, JCCsj held an informal reception to honor Yoshi Tasaka, Community Relation Liaison for the Consulate-General of Japan in San Francisco.
This year, Halloween fell on a Monday, a bad day for working parents and school children. But that didn’t stop hordes of costume-clad families from enjoying the festivities held in JapanTown.
This year’s dinner was held on Saturday, November 5th at the Holiday Inn – San Jose•Silicon Valley. The theme was “Kansha” (Gratitude).
On July 21st, San Jose JACL hosted the Bay Area Asian Pacific American Legislative Staffers’ (BAAPALS) 8th Annual Summer Intern Mixer.
San Jose JACL’s 13th Annual Community Recognition Dinner – Kansha (Gratitude) to be held November 5th will honor four deserving individuals.
The Japantown Prepared! emergency preparedness effort has been led by Rich Saito and his team to develop a community-wide response plan in the event of a major disaster.
Our local community treasure, Julie Kimiyo Hubbard, was one of three nationwide winners of the inaugural AARP Asian American and Pacific Islander Community Hero Awards.
