Gearing Up for the 2020 Census

By Sharon Uyeda

Why is it important to be counted, especially in the AAPI community? The data collected can be used for advocacy purposes. When working with state or federal legislators, census data can be used to provide solid factual information on AAPI population presence; having these numbers is important when advocating for more representation on immigration, health care, environmental justice or economic issues. The data is also relevant to how land is redistricted, which affects voting representation, as the Asian population continues to grow, voting power in elections will increase and we’ll have more “say” on the issues and political officials elected into office.

The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring for a variety of temporary jobs. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, pass a criminal background check, and be a U.S. citizen. Positions that are available are field supervisors, recruiting assistant, census takers and office staff. Apply online at or call 1-855-562-2020.
