2018 Year in Review

The following is a comprehensive list of our activities and accomplishments for the year. Thank you to all of our members and supporters for helping to make 2018 very successful. We look forward to working with you in 2019!

  • Hosted JACL membership workshop given by National Membership Coordinator, Mariko Fujimoto

  • Participated in Japantown Immersive

  • Attended Yu-Ai Kai 44th Anniversary Dinner

  • Provided multigenerational family (Roy Takeuchi) to participate in the Day of Remembrance ceremony; Sharon announced Camp names

  • Manned SJ JACL information table at Genocide/Social Justice Conference at West Valley College

  • Participated in Nikkei Matsuri with Korokke Booth

  • In response to National appeal, donated Legacy Fund distribution check ($1,577.68) back to National

  • Sharon and Tom were part of contingent to welcome the Consul General to San Jose Japantown

  • Signed on to letter drafted by National JACL to the House Appropriations Committee urging continued funding of the Japanese American Consignment Sites grant funding, which President Trump has decided to eliminate

  • Welcomed Ryan O’Carroll and Kaitlyn Thomas as new Co-Treasurers for the Chapter

  • Held Scholarship Luncheon

  • Represented San Jose JACL at the Japanese Cemetery Trust Memorial Day Services at Oak Hill Cemetery

  • Joined Japantown contingent at City Hall to be commended for Japantown Prepared program

  • Attended San Jose Taiko 45th Anniversary Dinner

  • Held annual IMB Clean Up Day

  • Tom Oshidari comments were included in Bay Area News Group article, “Travel Ban Ruling Called ‘disappointing’”

  • Sharon Uyeda was Chapter Delegate to JACL National Convention in Philadelphia.

  • Attended SCC Sheriff Laurie Smith’s Listening Session

  • Held Annual SJ JACL Appreciation BBQ

  • Attended flag dedication ceremony for Norman Mineta at Mineta International Airport

  • Became a Legacy Partner to help bring the film An American Story: Norman Mineta and His Legacy to San Jose; attended VIP reception and showing

  • Began holding monthly Community Action Sessions

  • Manned a voter registration table at Roy’s Station to register voters

  • Attended CAIR Banquet fundraiser

  • Solicited ads for Pacific Citizen fundraiser in response to National JACL appeal

  • Continued property management of the Issei Memorial Building, providing below-market rents to non-profit tenants; also continued renovations—new kitchen sink and counter top, new sidewalk concrete, and new front doors.

  • Participated in “Halloween in J-town”

  • Drafted and mailed “Year-End Donation” letter

  • Participated in Yu-Ai Kai mochitsuki

  • Attended JCCsj Bonenkai
